Vandal-proof toilets planned for Campbelltown

The grim looking steel loo at Campbelltown Skate Park aims to deter vandals

JAIL-STYLE stainless steel toilets will be installed in trouble spots across Campbelltown in an effort to curb vandalism at public facilities.

Campbelltown Council has already installed the toilets at the Leumeah skate park but will install the vandal-proof bowls at the Macquarie Fields skate park, in southern parts of Campbelltown and at sporting grounds when the existing loos need replacing.

The council is not afraid to try out new toilet technology.

In 2006, it installed the space-age lavatory Exeloo III, which washes and dries itself and expels loiterers after 10 minutes, in Ingleburn’s Oxford Rd. In 2005 a new waterless urinal used at Campbelltown Civic Centre and other city public toilets made headlines.

Campbelltown Mayor Aaron Rule said it was “sad” that the council needed to resort to using jail-issue toilets in its latest project. “It’s a sad reflection on the small number of people who treat our public facilities this way. But we want to provide the best facilities for our residents,” he said.

Stainless steel toilet provider RBA Group said the jail-style bowls were more hygienic and safer for residents. “While the initial outlay for using stainless steel products is more expensive than ceramic, the long term benefits are far more cost effective,” spokesman Luke Ricketts said.

“Not only from not having to constantly replace damaged equipment but also not having a hurt or injured patron sue for damages.”

Acting city works director John Hely said the council would consider installing more vandal-proof toilets in the future.

“The alternate stainless steel systems have proved to be more resilient to vandalism, with graffiti being easier to remove and damage to the fittings being much harder to inflict,” he said.
